Whether you love architecture, history, or simply enjoy strolling through a characterful city center, Alkmaar offers plenty of special places to discover.

Waaggebouw

The Waaggebouw is undoubtedly one of the most famous buildings in Alkmaar. Where the poor and pilgrims were once accommodated, the square grew in the 16th century into the setting of the famous Cheese Market. Every Friday, the bell still rings here as the starting signal of the market, and cheeses are traded with the traditional handclap.

Great St. Lawrence Church

The Great St. Lawrence Church is the showpiece of Alkmaar and has been a landmark in the city center for centuries. The imposing church is known for its Gothic architecture, famous organs, and impressive vaults. Inside, you will discover historical artworks, special details, and a rich history that is still visible today.

Mill of Piet

Where previously several mills stood on the city walls, the Mill of Piet (Molen van Piet) is the only one remaining in the city center of Alkmaar. The characteristic 18th-century mill has grown into an iconic part of the city and towers high above the historic facades.

Excise tower

On the Bierkade stands the distinctive excise tower, formerly the city's tax office. Imported goods were inspected here and excises were levied. Notable detail: in 1924, the entire tower was moved several meters to make room for the widening of the quay.

House with the Cannonball

On the canal, you will find the remarkable House with the Cannonball, one of the most famous historical buildings in Alkmaar. The name refers to the Spanish cannonball that hit the facade during the Siege of Alkmaar and is still visible there. The wooden house is one of the oldest homes in the city and tells a special story from Alkmaar's history.

Fish Market Halls

The Fish Market Halls are a reminder of the time when Alkmaar had various markets for trading in fish, butter, and grain, among other things. Under the characteristic galleries, traders sold their fresh catch for centuries. Today, the Fish Market Halls remain a special historical point along the water.
